The Storyline

Amidst the bustling brilliance of Broadway, “Gutenberg! The Musical!” unfolds a narrative that’s as quirky as it is quaint. Our protagonists, the aspiring playwrights Bud and Doug, are on a quest, a quest that’s not just about the tunes and the tales, but a testament to their tenacity. Their dream is to craft a musical marvel honoring the 15th-century inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg. However, our comedic champions find themselves in a fictional farce filled with whimsy and wit as they navigate through the waters of historical fiction 🎭.

Gutenberg Musical

The humorous heart of “Gutenberg! The Musical!” beats with a rhythm of ridiculousness as it throws historical accuracy to the wind. Bud and Doug, with their unyielding enthusiasm, tread the thin line between the factual and the fictional, and oh, how they dance upon it with a delightful disregard for the dreary drudgery of dates and details! The narrative they spin is a tapestry of tales that’s as amusing as it is audacious. But what’s the source of all the snickers and snorts in the audience, you ask? It’s the duo’s endearing earnestness in presenting a “historical fiction” that is more fiction than historical, which leads to a ludicrous yet lovable narrative full of comical concoctions.

The plot thickens as our daring dreamers imagine a dastardly monk who stands as a stalwart against literacy in their quaint town. Ah, the antagonist, a monk most malicious, who opposes the spread of knowledge as vehemently as our virtuous visionaries vouch for it. The whimsical war between Gutenberg and the grim guardian of ignorance unfolds in a series of novelty numbers that are as hilarious as they are heartwarming. The mean monk, biscuits, romance and the rambunctious rebels who root for reading, all find a mention in the merry musical mayhem that “Gutenberg! The Musical!” manifests. This fictional feud not only tickles the funny bone but also tugs at the heartstrings, creating a concoction of comedy and concern that’s too tempting to resist. Oh, how the melodies meld with the mockeries to make a musical masterpiece!

The imaginative ingenuity of Bud and Doug shines through as they delve into musical theatre best practices with a playful poke at the predictable. The “I want” songs, motifs, callbacks, and turntables are all part of the jestful journey that “Gutenberg! The Musical!” takes you on. And as the curtains fall, the audience is left with not just a chuckle but a chorus of cheers for the charming charade that celebrates the chutzpah of chasing one’s dreams, against all odds. So, who triumphs in the end – the malicious monk or the merry makers of musical? The answer lies in the laughters and the lyrics of “Gutenberg! The Musical!”.

Musical and Theatrical Elements

The melodic magic of “Gutenberg! The Musical!” is as enchanting as the evening star shining over the Broadway skyline. The musical numbers, each a gem in a crown of comedic jewels, weave whimsy with wisdom, creating a tapestry of tunes that tingle the senses and tickle the funny bone. The songbook of this show isn’t just a collection of chords and choruses, but a cauldron of comedic concoctions that deliver delightful doses of drama, drizzled with a dressing of dry humor. Oh, how the harmonies of humor interlace with the hum of historical histrionics to birth a bounty of belly laughs!

Amidst the theatrical antics, a three-piece band emerges as the unsung hero, orchestrating an opus that accentuates the absurdity while adding a dash of dignity to the duo’s dramatic exploits. Conducted by the keyboardist Marco Paguia, the band beckons a beat that not only sets the stage ablaze with musical mirth but also melds seamlessly with the mélange of mayhem manifesting on stage. The seamless synergy between the tunes and the theatrics amplifies the amusement, making each musical number a narrative nugget filled with nuance and nonsense. The band, with its rhythmic renditions, resonates with the riotous rollercoaster of a ride that is “Gutenberg! The Musical!”, enhancing the enchantment encased in each episode of euphonic euphoria.

Now, let’s tip our hats to a theatrical trick that’s as simple as it is sublime. The unique character portrayal using monogrammed baseball caps is nothing short of a stroke of genius. Our theatrical trailblazers, Bud and Doug, don these caps to dash through a dizzying array of over 30 roles, with each cap serving as a cue to a new character. Ah, the simplicity and the sophistication of using monogrammed baseball caps to transition between Gutenberg, his crush Helvetica, a monk, a young monk, a drunk, and a dead baby, among others! At times, the hats stack high atop their heads, symbolizing the stack of scenarios they shuffle through with a swiftness that’s as startling as it is spectacular.

The rapid role-reversals, the dexterous dance between characters, and the cap-clad chronicles create a carousel of comedic characters that circle around the central story. This innovative idea imbues “Gutenberg! The Musical!” with an idiosyncratic identity, making it a memorably merry musical masterpiece. The caps, though casual, carry a cavalcade of comedic creativity, making each switch a spectacle, each transition a treat. So, as Bud and Doug bob between roles with a balletic brilliance, the audience is whisked away into a whimsical world where humor hops from hat to hat, painting a picturesque panorama of playful performances. Who knew a simple cap could carry such a cacophony of characters and a cascade of comedic charm?

Production and Direction

The whimsical whisper of “Gutenberg! The Musical!” began as a modest murmur in the Off-Broadway echelons, where it embarked on a journey of jest and jubilation. The narrative nugget crafted by Scott Brown and Anthony King found its footing amidst the quaint quarters of Off-Broadway, before bounding onto the bigger, bolder stages of Broadway. The evolution of this eccentric extravaganza from a small-scale affair to a booming Broadway bonanza is a ballad of boldness, brimming with buoyant beats that beckoned the big break.

At the helm of this hilarious historical hoax is the dexterous director, Alex Timbers, whose theatrical tenacity and visionary verve breathed life into the bones of “Gutenberg! The Musical!”. Timbers, a titan of the theatre, tenderly tweaked the text, tailoring it to tease and tantalize the tastebuds of the Broadway buffs. His direction didn’t just dust off the drapes but drew out the drama, drenched in delightful doses of drollery. It was under his adept artistry that the musical morphed, melding the mock historical mayhem with melodic mirth, making “Gutenberg! The Musical!” a much-cherished masterpiece of modern-day musical theatre 🎵.

And oh, the spectacle of sights and sounds that the Broadway run of “Gutenberg! The Musical!” brought forth! As if the comical cavalcade wasn’t captivating enough, the production peppered the performance with additional effects like smoke, fog, and disco lighting, weaving a whimsical wonderland where the magic of musical theatre melded with the mischief of mock historical narrative. The smoke and fog effects emerged as ethereal entities, enveloping the escapades on stage in an enigmatic embrace, while the disco lighting danced in delightful discord with the dramatic drollery, dazzling the audience. Each effect, though extraneous, exuded an extra essence of excitement, enhancing the euphoria encased in each episode of “Gutenberg! The Musical!”.

The whimsical wonder that is “Gutenberg! The Musical!” is a testament to the terrific teamwork of a talented troupe, led by a director with a distinctive dramatic dexterity. The transition from Off-Broadway to Broadway wasn’t just a shift in stage, but a stupendous stride in storytelling, a stride that soared on the wings of whimsy, whisking the audience away into a world where the wacky and the whimsical waltz in a wonderful whirlwind of wit and wisdom. So, as the lights dim and the laughter lingers, the legacy of “Gutenberg! The Musical!” lives on, a legacy laced with laughter, love, and a lot of ludicrous lore.

Went to see Left on Tenth here last week whilst on holiday from London. Lovely theatre, a very good play that kept my attention throughout. The opening monologue by Julianna Margulies was captivating and set the scene for the whole show which ran for 100 minutes with no intermission. Indeed the whole cast were amazing. My only criticism of the theatre is that is was so cold. I sat downstairs in seat P1 which was at the back next to the door but as the lobby is so small the December temperature came right to me. Once the show started and the curtains drawn it was no much of an issue but I saw the whole show with my coat on so as not to disturb my neighbour during the show.As an aside I stayed behind after the show at the stage door (something I never do in London, always rushing for the train home) when the cast came out. Ms Margulies was a delight happy to make brief conversation, sign programmes and pose for selfies. A truly lovely lady.

This was my first time in this theater, and we were in the Orchestra section and found the seats comfortable and not too crowded. The setting was very nice and ornate. The play, however, was not so good. Left on tenth is just a cathartic romp by the author on their personal experience.

The Heart of Rock and Roll is a new musical comedy based on the music of Huey Lewis and the news.If you are a fan of Lewis, you might really like this play with a razor thin plot that can be amusing at times. The choreography, dancing and singing is typical Broadway and excellent. But the story line for this production didn’t keep my interest and was somewhat boring.See it if you’re a fan of Lewis. Otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend it.

I was there with my family to watch Gutenberg! The musical. Before the show starts James Earl Jones asked us to put our phones away told us he was not our father, and repeated a few more of his famous tag lines. Made us all laugh. The theater is small and intimate. I don’t think there is a bad seat in the house. I would recommend anyone seeing any show here, but Gutenberg was fantastic. The original cast Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells was there and they are hilarious.

Funny!!!Gutenburg was suppose to be a play about two young guys whom spent their life savings renting a theatre, putting on a play about Printing press creator (Gutenburg). The play we watched was great but seating is tight for tall guys. I'm 6'4 and we sat up in the balcony section. My seat itself was fine but the rows are so close together that my left shin was pressing up against the seat in front of me and was really uncomfortable. I managed to take a couple playbills and fold them up and put them between my shin and the seat, this made it more comfortable but still not ideal. If you're tall perhaps book a box seat.

Recently saw Gutenberg the Musical here. View of stage from front center mezzanine is outstanding. Sound quality also very good. We had front row seats, so had a bit more leg room, but the seats are cramped and not comfortable. My husband requested a glass of water for me to take some medication and was charged $10. That’s more than a little ridiculous. Worse is that the water was undrinkable with a metallic taste and chemical smell. Of the four ushers we encountered, three were lovely. The fourth was very curt and nasty to the couple in front of us and was busy yelling at another usher. Security at the entrance was efficient and moved the line to enter quickly.

However, amidst the harmonious hymns of hilarity, there hummed a handful of hushed hesitations. A few critics cast a cautious eye on the show’s length, lamenting it as a lengthy lore that perhaps lingered a little too long on stage. The narrative, noted as a nearly two-hour sketch, was nibbled at for being a tad too overstuffed, risking the ruin of a ravishing return of rapturous responses. Yet, even in these critiques, the core of comedy wasn’t compromised, but a craving for a crisper, more concise concoction was conveyed.
